The Ducati 1199 Panigale wins prestigious Compasso d’Oro design award

  • The Ducati 1199 Panigale is the first ever motorcycle to be presented with Italy’s most important design award
  • Presented every three years by ADI (Associazione per il Disegno Industriale) award intended to celebrate the quality of Italian design
  • The Ducati 1199 Panigale becomes part of the “Compasso d’Oro Collection”, recognised by Ministry of Cultural Heritage & Activities as “of exceptional artistic and historical interest”

Borgo Panigale (Bologna), 29 May, 2014 – The intense focus on design and style which Ducati maintains as a principle feature of its iconic motorcycles, and that further underlines the famous company’s Made-in-Italy character, has now been recognised in the Ducati 1199 Panigale Superbike and rewarded with the highly prestigious and influential Italian award for design – the Compasso d’Oro.

Hosted at the former Ansaldo works in Milan on the evening of 28 May, the awards ceremony presented over 270 products entered for this 23rd edition. Held every three years, an expert panel selects the most significant and merit-worthy products to be awarded the prestigious ADI Compasso d’Oro award. On this occasion, they awarded the Ducati 1199 Panigale: “Compasso d’Oro for having transferred competition level performance to an elegant mass-production model that is still consistent with the brand’s traditional image”.

“This historical and prestigious award is extremely important for Ducati,” said Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding. “It is further recognition of our role as ambassadors of Italian design, a ‘title’ we greatly value.”

The Ducati 1199 Panigale is the first ever motorcycle to have received this important award and subsequently enters the Compasso d’Oro Collection. Running for over 60 years, almost 300 projects have received the prize and these, in addition to more than 2000 others selected for “honourable mentions”, form the Historical Collection of the ADI Compasso d’Oro awards.

The Collection, managed by the ADI Foundation created in 2001, represents a heritage of excellence for creativity and production. It is described by the Lombardy Regional Department of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage as being of “exceptional artistic and historical interest” and is subsequently included in their Collection of National Heritage.

Founded in 1954, the ADI Compasso d’Oro is the world’s longest established and most influential design award. Developed from an idea by Gio Ponti, it was first organized by the Rinascente department store group with the aim of highlighting the value and quality of early Italian-designed products. In 1964, ADI became responsible for its organisation, supervising its impartiality and integrity.

The winner of the 23rd Compasso d’Oro Award, the 1199 Panigale, is the Ducati Superbike par excellence with innovation that has established the special machine as a new benchmark reference within its industry. Already regarded as an Italian icon of design, the 1199 Panigale presents incredible engineering solutions with design specifically intended to raise the performance bar as high as possible. The technical features fully integrate the 195hp Superquadro engine with a monocoque frame, achieving an optimum power-weight ratio and enhancing the motorcycle’s speed, acute agility and overall riding experience.
